Craig Milverton Trio with Denny Illett - A TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE

Craig Milverton – piano / Al Swainger - bass / Coach York – drums / Denny Illett – guitar & vocals

In Denny and Craig’s latest project 'A Tribute To Nat King Cole' they delve into the rich legacy of Nat King Cole's ground breaking work of the early 40s with his trio and on into his world famous years as not only as a brilliant pianist who influenced Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans amongst many others but as a supremely gifted vocalist, again influencing so many vocalists through the generations that followed him.

Denny has a wonderful rich baritone alongside his brilliant guitar playing and Craig is ideal as the pianist to accompany him with his virtuosic skills and love of Nat King Cole's playing.

A show of supreme swing and joyous vocals.

Denny Illett - guitarist, vocalist, bandleader, arranger and educator

It’s rare to find musicians who can convincingly slot into a variety of musical scenarios yet continue to successfully communicate their own identity. Denny Ilett is one such musician.

Born to a musical family and steeped in the music of New Orleans, Denny is a self-taught musician who has played in every musical scenario you can imagine - jazz, blues, big band, contemporary classical, orchestral, rock, soul, funk and psychedelia - he is an artist that has embraced music in all of its forms.

Denny has worked with some truly great musicians - inventor of funk Pee Wee Ellis, maverick British conductor Charles Hazlewood, Will Gregory of Goldfrapp, Adrian Utley of Portishead, Andy Sheppard, underground soul superstar Lewis Taylor, Manfred Mann frontman Paul Jones, virtuoso trumpet star Bobby Shew and the incomparable New Orleans vocalist Lillian Boutté. That particular musical relationship lasted over 20 years and together they toured the world, spreading the music and heritage of the Crescent City with Ilett as her musical director.

In 2013, Denny co-founded the Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival, becoming its artistic director. Through the festival, he has brought world class musicians such as Dr John, Maceo Parker, Madeleine Peyroux, Lee Konitz and John Scofield to the city as well as bringing attention to Bristol's own rich musical scene. Denny also arranges, conducts and plays for many large scale featured concerts at the festival. He also finds the time to teach at both Bristol and Bath Spa University’s, writes regular columns for Guitarist magazine and London Jazz News alongside providing educational content for JTC Guitar.

In 2018 Denny formed the Electric Lady Big Band, a 16-piece all-star ensemble dedicated to the music of Jimi Hendrix. The group have recorded two albums and have sold out venues such as Ronnie Scott’s along with Cheltenham, Leeds and Bristol jazz festivals.

A lifelong lover of big band and swing music, Denny regularly performs the music of Frank Sinatra and Nat ‘King’ Cole.

"a knockout guitarist, soulful and jazz-tinged" Guitarist magazine
